Practice Test

Prepare your students! Practice!

The goal is to walk through the tools and strategies students will need and use on test day.

The practice test is not graded.
You do not start a session (leave GUEST SESSION checked).
For ELA, students will not have time to read all of the passages.
It's okay if students type in wrong answers in order to proceed to the next screen of questions.

The ideal practice day...

  1. Logon before practice day and go through the Training AND Practice tests for your subject.
  2. Choose which test (or both?) you think would best prepare your students for the real test.
  3. On practice day, pick up your envelope/cards, then fire up the projector.
  4. Students: get earbuds/headsets plugged in
  5. Students login to the PRACTICE test with their SSIDs; you logon as a guest.
  6. Walk your students through the questions and discuss answering strategies, in addition to the tools available.

Tools you want to discuss...

  • Single or multiple choice? How to select and UN select answers (especially within a paragraph..."highlight all sentences that apply"
  • Using dictionary, calculator, highlighting with passages (if available), text to speech (accommodation)
  • Formulas and graphs: how to build your answer and how to CHANGE or delete parts of your answers

PAUSE RULES

CAT PORTION/CAST TEST

If the student pauses the test for more than 20 minutes, the student will no longer be able to go back and change their answers, even the ones marked for review. TIP: give students a 10-15 minute warning BEFORE THE BELL to finish up any writing questions (or don't start a new one).

PERFORMANCE TASK

No pause rules. Student can pause and come back and finish the next day.

Notepad

This resource is used for making notes about an item.

The digital notepad is item-specific and is available through the end of the test segment.

Notes are NOT saved when the student moves on to the next segment or after a break of more than 20 minutes.

TIPS

! STUDENTS DO NOT TYPE the "CA-"
When logging in, the students do NOT type the "CA-" in front of their SSID. They only type the number.

NUMBER THE STUDENT CARDS
(submitted by Radomske)
- easily know if one is missing
- match to device number

CARDS ON PRACTICE DAY
Choose wisely WHEN to hand out the cards. Be sure students know to first click on PRACTICE AND TRAINING TESTS (NOT the real login area!)

HEADSETS/EARBUDS

Encourage students to bring their own earbuds.

Don't forget to plug them in.

In Lab 210/Baghat

 - put computer volume up half way BEFORE opening the browser

 - plug in headsets BEFORE opening the browser
