About FEMINEERS

Dwyer is very excited to have partnered with Cal Poly Pomona to bring a wonderful new program to our campus. Femineers was created and funded by Cal Poly Pomona's College of Engineering in 2013 to inspire additional females to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in their education and career. The program provides K-12 students with project-based learning, female engineering student mentors, and opportunities to visit Cal Poly Pomona, all while building a sustainable program and community for current and future STEM leaders.

We anticipate holding the classes after school one day per week, starting in early November. We will also be offering more STEM opportunities for both male and female students throughout the year, so stay tuned!

Goal

The goal of the Femineer™ Program is to build female student’s self-efficacy and confidence in STEM subjects and provide a pathway to college and career opportunities in STEM fields.

Curriculum

Curriculum for this year will be Raspberry Pi. Students will build and program robots using the Python programming language.

2019 - 2020 Raspberry Pi Robotics 

The third-year 30-hour program is based on the popular Raspberry Pi computer using the Python programming language to build a robot. Through this process, the Femineers acquire skills that engineering students first learn in college.

 

2018 - 2019 Wearable Technology

This is a 30-hour project that incorporates computer and advanced electronic technologies into clothing and accessories Participants learn:

  • Basic circuitry and C programming

  • How to use conductive thread, bright neopixels, and wearable microcontroller

2017 - 2018 Creative Robotics

Curriculum for Creative Robotics includes participants learning basic electronics in a fun and engaging way. Young ladies will work in teams to design robots out of everyday materials. The program will commence with a trip to the Annual Femineer Summit in spring to present student designs and learn from other Femineer programs.

This is a 30-hour project in which participants learn basic electronics in a fun and engaging way. Participants learn:

  • Safety procedures

  • How to use tools

  • How to work in teams to design robots out of everyday materials

Creative Robotics Example Project

Here is what I made during the Femineers training program for Creative Robotics at Cal Poly Pomona. I have multiple motors, lights, and sensors controlling my winter snowman themed project. You can’t hear it, but it is also playing “All I Want for Christmas is You”, which was controlled by a motion sensor. It was very fun to create and present.

Dwyer Femineers will have more time than I did to use their creativity to develop any kind of project to present, the sky's the limit when you are using your creativity and natural engineering skills. I can’t wait to see what you create.

I know from my personal experience with Femineers that everyone will have a lot of fun creating, presenting their projects, looking at other Femineers’ projects, meeting new people and have a good time talking about engineering. This could open a whole new world of opportunity for your future in STEM.
